WE ARE LOOKING FOR OUR GREATEST ESCAPADE EVER. Classes are set to resume. Time is running out. Aside from playing a few hoops, where we lost more games than won, we’ve got nothing. Not a good story to boast on your college classmates. ”Why don’t we go and shoot the rapids?”, suggested my friend. Now, that will be the perfect centerpiece of our story telling tales when we go back to school. The plan is sealed. So together with Neil and Gerry, two of my closest friend, we begun our journey to greatness. We’ve been through a lot of trips, so most of our things are just lying around, waiting to be picked. And we are not going anywhere, without my 4 person tent.
According to our map, the rapids is on some far-flung area. The road was bumpy. We were jarred to the teeth since the car’s suspension system seems non-existent. Just as the car was moving in a sharp incline, when all of a sudden, it rained. The road became muddy and slippery in an instant. Without warning our car skidded downward. One of the tires hit a protruding rock and we went plummeting. All we know is that our car finally stopped – upside down.
The worst is far from over, but the important thing is we are alive. The storm has broken. That is the only consolation we’ve got at the moment. All of us suffered broken bones. Gerry and I suffered from a broken leg and a broken arm respectively. Neil, was the worst hit. Aside from a fractured leg, he was unconscious. Although we could move about, we know, we’re in bad condition.
Dire as it is, we cannot afford to panic. Somehow our first-aid training came into fold cause we were able to patch ourselves. It’s lucky that the 4 person tent did not suffer any damage. Although it was hard and painful, we were able to set it up properly. Laboriously we brought some of our stuff, specially foods inside. Next we hauled Neil, taking great care not to aggravate his injuries, inside also. The rain is starting again and growing stronger by the minute. It was a relief to be inside the warmth and comfort of the 4 person tent. The tent’s exterior is more than a match to the brewing storm outside.
We’ve done everything possible in our condition and we are just hoping that help soon arrives. After two days, help finally arrived. The attractive colors of our 4 person tent caught the attention of the roving forest ranger. His instincts tells him we are in trouble and quickly radioed for help. We cannot help but cry when the rescuers arrived. We really thought this was the end for all of us.
We were airlifted and brought to the local hospital. The injuries we took, although very severe, has no permanent consequences, and we are very thankful for it. Time is a great healer. God gave us another chance in life. It made us value life for what it is. It’s kind of paradoxical, but we got our wish. We had the greatest escapade in our life. But that experience is something we’d rather not have a repeat performance.
